About Us
Improving the quality of life in Masaka, Uganda.
The Twesiga-Mukama Federation works to improve the quality of life of people in the Kyanamukaaka and Mukungwe sub-counties of Masaka, Uganda. The main approach to doing so is by increasing water sanitation and hygiene and sustaining income generating activities in rural villages. Using a community based approach, the Federation empowers individuals to stand up as leaders in their villages to make change with the goal of “Peace Unity & Equality” for all people.
History of The Federation
The Twesiga Mukama Federation was founded in 2012 as a branch of Kitovu Mobile which had been helping support community needs un Masaka, Uganda since 1987. In an effort to focus mainly on water sanitation and hygine (WASH) projects in Uganda, the federation started working with only the Kyanamukaaka sub-county to develop pit latirines and tippy taps in the community. In 2016, the federation started working the Mulugwe sub-county to create the Twesiga-Mukama Joint Federation to expand their reach. In addition, we have mobilized to start funding shallow wells and water tanks to increase water accessibility, as well as creating a community network of educational and economic empowerment groups. Today, we are proud to have 172 Self Help Groups and 16 Cluster Level Associations under the Federation.
Empowerment Structure
The Twesiga Mukama Federation has developed a top-down structure to make sure that its efforts reach as many community members as possible.
Self-Help Groups: Family Level
The base of the project are Self-Help Groups (SHGs), where women in villages gather weekly to create a savings together and engage in income generating activates. The only requirements to be able to join an SHG are food security in your family and an income generating activity so the member has money to contribute to the group savings fund.
Cluster-Level Associations: Community Level
Cluster-Level Associations (CLAs) are comprised of representatives from SHGs. CLAs are responsible for forming new SHGs, supporting existing SHGs, lobbying for support, and linking with other organizations. Additionally, CLAs coordinate trainings about sanitation and hygiene for the SHGs in their communities and find markets to sell products made in SHGs.
Twesiga-Mukama Joint Federation: Region Level
Made up of representatives from CLAs, the Federation ensures that SHGs and CLAs are functioning properly and that needs in the communities are met. The federation also works to sensitize community members to changing attitudes in order to improve health and maintain partnerships with various organizations.
